Grandma Smith's Crochet - "Nicole A" Tablecloth Border

The sample shown at the left was worked with #10 crochet cotton using a size 6 (1.6mm) steel crochet hook. It measures 5.5” in depth.
This tablecloth border is suited for a round tablecloth since it has a natural curve. The cloth portion of the tablecloth should be preshrunk and finished, including the hem, before undertaking the crocheted border. The tablecloth border is worked in three stages: the filet point border, the point edging, then the round motifs that are attached to the 'V' spaces between the points.

Definitions:
1 triple picot: ch 5, join with sl st to first ch of ch-5, ch 5, join with sl st to same chain where previously joined, ch 5, join with sl st to same chain where previously joined;
1 triple picot with attachment: work as above, triple picot, except when working the second ch-5 loop you'll pause to work an attachment stitch as follows: work only 2 ch sts of the loop, then work a st (1 sc, 1 dc or 1 tr) into the place where you wish to attach the triple picot, then resume working the remaining 2 ch, and the sl st to close this loop of the triple picot. Then resume working the third loop of the triple picot.
Filet Point Border:
R1: ch 20, turn
R2: in 6th chain from hook work (2dc, ch 2, 2dc), ch 4, sk 5 ch, 1 sc in next ch, sk 5 ch, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in next ch, ch5, turn
R3: (2dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, ch 8, sk 4 ch, sk 1sc, sk 4 ch, sk 2 dc, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in ch-2 sp, tr in ch-3 sp, ch 3, turn
R4: sk 2 dc, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in ch-2 sp, ch 4, 1 sc in ch-8 arch, ch 4, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in ch-2 sp, ch 2, sk 1 dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 2, sk 2 ch, 1 dc in next ch, ch 5, turn
R5: (sk 2 ch, 1 dc in next dc, ch 2) 2 times, (2dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, ch 8, sk 4 ch, sk 1sc, sk 4 ch, sk 2 dc, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in ch-2 sp, tr in ch-3 sp, ch 3, turn
R6: sk 2 dc, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in ch-2 sp, ch 4, 1 sc in ch-8 arch, ch 4, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in ch-2 sp, ch 2, sk 1 dc, 1 dc in next dc,(ch 2, sk 2 ch, 1 dc in next dc) 2 times, ch 2, sk 2 ch, 1 dc in next ch, ch 5, turn
R7 through R15: work R5 and R6 alternately, each time increasing the underlined repeat count by 2;
R16: sk 2 dc, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in ch-2 sp, ch 4, 1 sc in ch-8 arch, ch 4, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in ch-2 sp, ch 5, turn
Repeat R3 through R16: for length desired, ending on a R15 row. Because full pattern repeats are needed for the border, you may have to make the border a little longer than needed and ease the border to fit as you attach it to the tablecloth when finishing. Also, to allow for shrinkage, make one or two extra pattern repeats and don't weave in the ends at the end of the border until the measurement is checked after washing, drying and blocking (see 'Finishing').
Point edging:
The edging for each filet point is worked separately. With the right side of the work facing you, at each point do the following:
Counting the corner square, count 5 filet squares to the right of the point and join the thread at the right side of this square at the edge of the work. Along the edge, work 4 sc in first filet sp, 4 sc in next filet sp, (2 sc, 1 triple picot, 2 sc) in next filet sp, 4 sc in each of the next 2 filet sp, (4 sc, 1 triple picot, 4 sc) in the corner filet sp, 4 sc in each of the next 2 filet sp, (2 sc, 1 triple picot, 2 sc) in next filet sp, 4 sc in each of the next 2 filet sp, fasten off.
With a tapestry needle, bury the thread tails through the base of the sc's on the edging to weave the ends in. One filet point edging completed.
Repeat these steps for each filet point.
Round motifs:
Make as many of these as you have points on the filet point border.
R1: ch 12, with sl st join to the first chain to form a ring
R2: work 29 sc around ring; join to first with a sl st
R3: ch 2, *2 dc in next sc, 2 dc, repeat from * around the ring; join with sl st to the top of the beginning ch-2 (39 dc's made, counting the ch-2 as 1 dc)
R4: ch 9, *sk 2 dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 7, repeat from * around ring; join with sl st the last ch-7 to the first ch-10 loop 2 ch's up from the base (13 ch-7 loops made)
R5: work 4 sc's along the ch's of the next ch-7 loop to bring the thread to the middle of the loop. *Ch 9, 1 sc in middle of next loop, repeat from * around circle; join last ch-9 with sl st to the sc at the middle of the first loop (13 ch-9 loops made)
R6: work 5 sc's along the ch's of the next ch-9 loop to bring the thread to the middle of the loop. *Ch 7, 1 sc in middle of next loop, repeat from * around the circle; join the last ch-7 with sl st to the sc at the middle of the first loop (13 ch-7 loops made)
R7: general directions for the final round: ch 2, *ch 4, 1 sc in next loop, ch 4, 1 dc in sc, 1 triple picot, repeat from * around the circle; the last ch-4 should be joined with a sl st to the top of the starting ch-2 before making the final triple picot (13 triple picots made). Some of the triple picots will be used to attach the round motif to the filet point border, positioning them in the V spaces between the points (see description of triple picot with attachment). Four triple picots will be attached to one side of the V and four to the other side. Use 1 dc for attachment to the triple picot near the filet point; use 1 sc for the remaining attachments, spacing them 3 filet spaces apart. See picture of sample. Weave in the ends.
Finishing:
Wash in hot water and let dry flat, without stretching, on a smooth surface. Allow it to dry and shrink to its natural size. When dry, block by pinning out on a padded surface, making sure picot, point and loop features are clear. Steam thoroughly by holding a steam iron closely above the surface but not touching. Let dry thoroughly. Pin the border to the tablecloth edging, easing to fit. Trim off any excess pattern repeats and weave in any remaining ends. Stitch border to the tablecloth with sewing thread, using tiny overcast stitches.
